CLEAR
Gin clear or nearly clear.
You can see the bottom in 4 feet of water. If wading, you have water up to your belly button and you can see your boots.

STAINED
Water is silty, muddy, green.
It has just rained, flooded, or there is considerable algae. You can see a bright bait in 2 or 3 feet of water. If wading in water up to your knees, you cannot see your boots very well.
